Dad’s mantra, “never go home the same way you went” was acted on in a big way on this 1958 trip. We went southeast from Ft. Worth to Port Arthur, Texas, on the Gulf of Mexico, where we spent some time on a beach. I brought home one of the largest conch shells I have seen in some time, with a decal declaring its Texas origin. It sat on my dresser through high school. Now it is displayed with smaller seashells and other mementos from vacations, as a fitting tribute to the foundational experience my parents gave me for road trips all my life.
