Sometime God gives me a chance to capture a small fraction of his wonders. If I do my part, I can share the gift with others. Be thankful that these wonders are created and preserved for all of us.
This Tanasi Memorial is another stop when I follow the Little Tennessee River to Citico Creek. It reminds me how misguided our government and its people can be, when we choose to mistreat others considered beneath us. This memorial is not enough. It doesn’t seem to teach us how badly we can treat other humans. Why is we cannot learn to just help others, whoever they are?
When I am in the area of Citico Missionary Baptist Church, I feel compelled to drive onto the hill in its cemetery. This time the view was particularly interesting, as always. I call these shots, through trees in winter, “ghost churches.” The first one I remember was at Cataloochee, in the Smokey Mountains National Park. When I see them, I get the sense that the church is always there, even if it sometimes seems obscured from us. The feeling moves me.
In 2018, Christie found this in a shop at Jekyll Island. It found its way onto the antique mantel the previous owners left in our house. This morning, the sun on it was just right.

My grandparents moved to this home after TVA acquired their farm on the Clinch River, in Claiborne County, Tennessee. That was probably around 1934. I was born in 1947, about 18 months before my grandfather died, and visited this farm until sometime after my grandmother died around 1959.

The day I was here, I realized the Clinch River is now Melton Hill Lake along this stretch. The significance is that my grandfather and grandmother raised my father far upstream, on the Clinch River. There were 12 children, 10 lived to be adults. One of the many stories was that timber was cut from the Long Mountain portion of the farm. Rafts were assembled and floated down the river to Chattanooga, where they were sold, with a train trip back to their home. This means, my grandfather, probably with my father and brothers, rounded this river bend when the spring brough “high water.” The farm was acquired for Norris Lake. We fished that part of the lake often.
